Bilateral meeting between the Minister of Commerce and Industry

of Timor-Leste and the Undersecretary Department of Trade and Industry of the Philippines.

Minister of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste, Mr. Nino Pereira had an official bilateral meeting with the Undersecretary Department of Trade and Industry of the Philippines, Mr. Allan B. Gepty. The objective of the meeting was to exchange views on potential economic cooperation and explore how the Philippines can assist Timor-Leste in regional economic integration such as ASEAN.

Excellency Minister of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste, Mr. Nino Pereira had an official bilateral meeting with the Undersecretary Department of Trade and Industry of the Philippines, Mr. Allan B. Gepty. The objective of the meeting was to exchange views on potential economic cooperation and explore how the Philippines can assist Timor-Leste in regional economic integration such as ASEAN.

 

In the meeting, Mr. Allan B. Gepty reiterated that the Philippines is very supportive of Timor-Leste’s accession journey to ASEAN as well as post-accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The Philippines stands ready to support Timor-Leste in strengthening its technical and institutional capacity to ensure the compliance with ASEAN standards and frameworks. Some areas of cooperation discussed in the meeting included the support on ASEAN priority economic agreements, market access offer and electronic commerce. To achieve the technical readiness for ASEAN membership, the Philippines recommended to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste to focus on the establishment of the strong technical trade negotiation team and trade legal framework within the Ministry.
