MCI Participates in the Opening of the Seminar on Timor-Leste’s Post-Accession to the

World Trade Organization

Dili, February 10, 2025

His Excellency, the Minister of Trade and Industry (MCI), Mr. Nino Pereira, participated today in the seminar organized by the Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, and Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mr. Francisco Kalbuady Lay. The event also featured the presence of the Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ambassador Xiangchen Zhang, and took place at the Dili Convention Center (CCD).

The seminar, themed "Maximizing the Benefits as a WTO Member: Creating Synergies for Greater Regional Integration as a Strategy for Timor-Leste’s Development by 2030," highlighted the importance of multilateralism and regional economic integration for the country’s sustainable growth.

Timor-Leste, the youngest nation in Asia, regained its independence on May 20, 2002, and has prioritized accession to both the WTO and ASEAN as strategic milestones to drive economic development. The government aims to leverage global trade networks to advance its national growth objectives.

Coordinating the accession processes to the WTO and ASEAN is crucial to maximizing the benefits of international trade, supporting internal reforms, and ensuring alignment with Timor-Leste’s Strategic Development Plan (2011-2030).

The opening ceremony marked an initial step in the country’s economic transformation, emphasizing that trade is a key driver of sustainable development. This effort will contribute to the nation’s long-term vision, aiming for inclusive growth and prosperity by 2030.

The seminar runs for three days, from February 9 to 12, 2025.
