Bilateral Meeting: Timor-Leste and Malaysia Strengthen

Efforts for economic Integration and ASEAN Acession

Minister of Commerce and Industry, Nino Pereira, met with Minister of Investment, Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, during the 31st ASEAN Economy Ministers Retreat (AEM Retreat), to discuss Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN and potential areas for economic cooperation.

Minister Nino Pereira congratulated Malaysia on its ASEAN Presidency in 2025 and briefed on Timor-Leste's progress in complying with the legal requirements of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). Timor-Leste's commitment to regional economic integration and seeking guidance from Malaysia on the ASEAN economic agreement. Minister Nino Pereira also requested continued support from Malaysia to provide technical assistance and training programs to help Timor-Leste align with the ASEAN economic framework.

Minister Tengku Zafrul acknowledged the significant progress that Timor-Leste has made in joining ASEAN and encouraged the country to accelerate the submission of ready instruments to facilitate a smooth integration process in the Malaysian Presidency this year. He also invited Timor-Leste to participate in business conferences in Malaysia, with the objective of increasing trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.

The meeting ended with an exchange of memories, symbolizing the partnership and continued commitment between Timor-Leste and Malaysia in advancing regional economic cooperation.
