MCI AND MALAYSIAN EMBASSY DISCUSS COOPERATION IN THE AREA OF CERTIFICATION OF
TIMOR-LESTE PRODUCTS FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has approached the Malaysian Embassy in Timor-Leste, to seek technical support to facilitate the process of certification of products, so that products from Timor-Leste can be accepted in the international market.
This approach was carried out on Wednesday this week, through the Director-General of Industry Mr. Martins Magno, accompanied by the former President of AIFAESA Mr. Ernesto Monteiro, to meet with the Malaysian Ambassador at the Palms Spring apartment, Hudi-laran, Dili.
In a meeting with Ambassador Dato Amarjit Singh Sarjit Singh, Director-General Martins Magno requested the Malaysian Embassy to assist the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in the process of establishing product certification and standardization, which is an important issue for Timor-Leste in the process of integration into the ASEAN Economic Community.
“In this meeting we discussed with the Ambassador about the essential requirements and this is very relevant to the responsibility of MCI, in the processes of Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN, and to ensure that Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN will not go in vain.” Said DG Martins Magno.
Furthermore, the Director-General said, this meeting as well as coordination with the Malaysian Embassy to the State of Malaysia or relevant Malaysian institutions, can be in the way to support the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in the processes to certify and standardize Timor-Leste's products, so as to obtain legality in the international market and attract investment to Timor-Leste.
Ambassador Dato Amarjit Singh noted this issue and assured his full support, as this issue is important to ensure food security in Timor-Leste. Therefore, the Malaysian Embassy in Timor-Leste will liaise with relevant institutions in Malaysia to assist the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in the future.
The Ambassador also assured that a Malaysian public institution, called SIRIM (Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia) relevant to the issue, will come to Timor-Leste to meet with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to establish cooperation to assist product certification, but need to coordinate in time to adjust the agenda.
“Our public institution that is currently responsible is SIRIM (Standard and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia) can meet with MCI in the coming times, according to the plan and agenda that will be agreed together.” Dato' Amarjid replied.
